We will read a diverse array of modern and contemporary poetry and discuss a wide range of poetic techniques and characteristics in order to develop both our own poetic writing and our individual aesthetic interests and ideas. In addition to sharpening their critical reading abilities, students in this program will develop the skills needed to create original poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. This course is an introduction to the following topics in English linguistics: history of English, etymology, vocabulary morphology , phonology, dictionaries, syntax, semantics, dialects, discourse analysis, and child language acquisition. Students will also sharpen their critical vocabulary as they analyze assigned readings, critique peer work, and receive critiques of their poems from both peers and instructor.
